We now live in transcultural world, where people, goods, culture, information easily cross the boundaries of regions and nations. Given this situation, we have come to the experience concerning facial and bodily expressions in a new way. For instance, uncountable images of the face (or body) have appeared through electronic media, among other ways. As a result, we have come to be pressed with the global standardization of the choice, interpretation, and sense of beauty concerning the face (or body). On the other hand, people seem to be increasingly eagerly involved in local or culturally specific interpretations or practices about the face and body, such as covering the face with a veil in Islamic regions.
How people represent, perform, or transform oneself, under such transcultural situations? How their clothing, costuming, or selfieing reflects such transcultural conditions? How they construct, invent, or negotiate their cultural identity through such act? In this international symposium, the scholars from Indonesia and Japan will explore those questions.
